I accepted the request of Sahitya Akademi with great enthusiasm because of my interest in the story genre. I felt as if I had a daily connection with the writers of my generation and the later generation and their creations, and also with the thought that I was also exposed to the various 'movements' that were taking place in the field of stories. Got a chance to get it. Therefore, this work will be both interesting and easy for me. Only two dozen stories have to be collected. On the basis of my thirty-five years of reading, will I not be able to collect even twenty-five stories?

 But the work was not as easy as I had thought. As soon as the work was taken up, complications started increasing.

साहित्य अकादेमी का अनुरोध मैंने बड़े उत्माह से स्वीकार किया था, कहानी-विधा में अपनी दिलचस्पी के कारण। मुझे लगता था जैसे अपनी पीढी और वाद की पीढ़ी के लेखकों और उनकी रचनाओं से मेश रोज-मर्ग का मम्बन्ध रहा है इस विचार से भी कि कहानी के क्षेत्र में जो तरह-तरह के 'आंदोलन' उठते रहे हैं उनके बीच से भी मुझे गुजर पाने का मौका मिला है। इसलिए यह काम मेरे लिए रुचि- कर भी होगा और आसान भी। कुन दो दर्जन कहानियाँ ही तो जुटाना है। तीस- पैतीस वर्ष के अपने पठन-पाठन के आधार पर क्या मैं पचीस कहानियाँ भी नहीं जुटा पाऊँगा ?

पर काम उतना आसान साबिन नही हुआ जितना मैं समझे बैठी था। ज्यों ही काम हाथ में लिया, पेचीदगियाँ बढ़ने लगी ।
