 The antiquity of this fact has been accepted by mentioning the condition of many routes leading to it ('Ete ​​Gachchanti Bahvah Panthano Dakshipatham', Aranyaka Parva, 58. 2) in the Puranas while pointing towards the strong connectivity of the geographical parts of our motherland. It has been said that 'The vast land north of the sea and south of the Himalayas is Bharatvarsha and the people living in it are known as Bharati-Praja.

 “Uttaram Yatsamudrasya Himavaddakshinam Cha Yat.
 Varsha Yad Bharatam Naam Yatra Yam Bharati Praja.”
 (Vayu Purana, 45,75)

 Many districts and ethnic lands of Dakshinapath are mentioned in the ancient Bhuvankosh lists. Rivers, mountains, art centres, places of pilgrimage and cities etc. were in tune with the consciousness center of our motherland. While explaining Dakshinapath-Mahatmya, Tatvabhedi, Vaidupya-mandit Rajshekhar has written in 'Kavyamimansa' that "The land area ahead of Mahimati is Dakshinapath, which includes Maharashtra, Mahipaka, Ashmak, Vidarbha, Kuntal, Krathkaishika, Shuparik, Kerala, Vanavasaka. Chola, Dandak, Pandya, Pallava, Ganga, Nasikya, Konkan, Kollagiri and Vallar etc. are the districts. Vindhya's mountain ranges like Dakshinapad, Mahendra, Malay Mekal, Pal Majar, Sahya and Shri Parvat etc. include Tapti, Payoshni, Godavari, Kaveri, Bhimrathi, Vena, Krishnavesh, Vajra. It is irrigated by rivers like Tungabhadra, Tamraparni, Utpalavati and Ravanganga. Sandalwood, cardamom, black pepper, camphor grown in Malayopatika and gems and pearls found in Dakshina Payodhi etc., various substances and treasures found in Dakshinapatha are world famous (Saptadashodhyayah, Deshavibhagah). In these words, Gajshekhar, a critic of the pride of this land and proud of the credit for tourism till the end of Kanyakumari, expresses here that this land (Dakshinapath) was an important unit of Indian geography and culture.

पुस्तक का संक्षिप्त विवरण:

एतिहासिक एवं सांस्कृतिक दृष्टिकोण से दक्षिणापथ, भारतवर्ष के एक अभिन्न महत्वपूर्ण अंग के रूप में भारतीय मनीषा द्वारा सदा से ही समादृत है। महाभारत में दक्षिणापथ की ओर जाने वाले अनेक मार्गों की स्थिति का उल्लेख करते हुए इस तथ्य की प्राचीनता को स्वीकारा गया है (‘एते गच्छन्ति बहवः पन्थानो दक्षिपथम्’, आरण्यक पर्व, 58. 2) हमारी मातभमि के भौगोलिक अङ्गों की दृढ़ सम्पृक्तता की ओर संकेत करते हुए पुराणों में कहा गया है कि ‘समुद्र के उत्तर एवं हिमालय के दक्षिण जो विशाल भूखण्ड है, वही भारतवर्ष है तथा इसमें रहने वाली जनता भारती-प्रजा के रूप में विश्रुत है –

“उत्तरं यत्समुद्रस्य हिमवद्दक्षिणं च यत् ।
वर्ष यद् भारतं नाम यत्र यं भारती प्रजा।।”
(वायु पुराण, 45,75)

प्राचीन भुवनकोश-सूचियों में उल्लिखित दक्षिणापथ के अनेक जनपद, जातीय-भूमियाँ. नदियाँ, पर्वत, कलाकेन्द्र, तीर्थ एवं नगर आदि हमारी मातृभूमि के चैतन्य केन्द्र के साथ रागवद्ध थे। दक्षिणापथ-महात्म्य की व्याख्या करते हुए तत्वभेदि, वैदुप्य-मण्डित राजशेखर ने ‘काव्यमीमांसा’ में लिखा है कि “महि मती के आगे का भू-प्रदेश दक्षिणापथ है, जिसमें महाराष्ट्र माहिपक, अश्मक, विदर्भ, कुन्तल, क्रथकैशिक, शूपरिक, केरल, वानवासक चोल, दण्डक, पाण्ड्य, पल्लव, गांङ्ग, नासिक्य, कोकण, कोल्लगिरि एवं वल्लर आदि जनपट हैं। विन्ध्य का दक्षिणापाद, महेन्द्र, मलय मेकल, पाल मजर, सह्य एवं श्रीपर्वत आदि गिरिश्रृंखलाएँ इसमें ताप्ती, पयोष्णी, गोदावरी, कावेरी, भीमरथी, वेणा, कृष्णवेश, वजरा. तुंगभद्रा, ताम्रपर्णी, उत्पलावती एवं रावणगंगा आदि सरिताओं द्वारा यह भूरिसिंचित है। मलयोपत्यका में उत्पन्न होने वाले चन्दन, इलायची, कालीमिर्च, कर्पूर तथा दक्षिण पयोधि में पाई जाने वाली मणियाँ एवं मोती आदि दक्षिणापथ में मुलभ विविध पदार्थ एवं निधियाँ जगत्विख्यात हैं (सप्तदशोऽध्यायः, देशविभागः)। इन शब्दों में इस भू-भाग के गौरव के समीक्षक एवं कन्याकुमारी के छोर तक पर्यटन के श्रेय से विभृपित गजशेखर यहाँ अभिव्यजित करते हैं कि यह भूखण्ड (दक्षिणापथ) भारतीय भूगोल एवं संस्कृति की एक महत्वपूर्ण इकाई थी।
