Due to the tendency to hide oneself and extreme aversion to self-praise, accurate information about the biographies of great men is not available. Due to lack of clear mention of life events, dates, achievements and circumstances, it becomes difficult to say anything in an authentic or decisive manner. In the context of Indian saints, it is especially significant that there is very little historical evidence available about their lives. Saint poets like Kabirdas, Surdas, Jayasi, Tulsidas etc. belong to the medieval period, but even today we have not been able to get authentic and undisputed information about them. Due to lack of factual information, many types of imaginary rumors get propagated and contradictory opinions start gaining prestige. Same is the situation regarding the biography of Goswami Tulsidas. There are many beliefs prevalent regarding his place of birth, clan, parents, family, guru etc., there is also controversy regarding the dates of birth and death.
The biography of Goswami Tulsidas has been mentioned in some texts. Tulsidas has been said to be the incarnation of Valmiki through a Chhappay in Bhaktamal written by Nabhadas. In this Chhappay, instead of Goswami ji's biography, his single-minded devotion to Ram has been underlined; the miraculous achievements of Tulsidas are mentioned in the Bhaktamal commentary written by Priyadas. In the discussion of two hundred and fifty-two Vaishnavans, Tulsidas has been described as the elder brother of Nandadas and in this context, there is a description of his stay in Kashi and his journey to Vraj. There is a detailed description of the life of Tulsidas in Gosaicharita written by Venimadhavdas. It is said that Venimadhavdas was a contemporary of Tulsidas and lived with him.

आत्मगोपन की प्रवृत्ति और आत्मश्लाघा के प्रति आत्यन्तिक विरति के कारण महापुरुषों के जीवन-वृत्त की सही जानकारी नहीं मिल पाती। जीवन की घटनाओं तिथियों, उपलब्धियों और परिस्थितियों का स्पष्ट उल्लेख न होने के कारण प्रामाणिक अथवा निर्णयात्मक ढंग से कुछ कह पाना कठिन हो जाता है। भारतीय सन्तों के सन्दर्भ में यह विशेष रूप से लक्षणीय है कि उनके जीवन-वृत्त का ऐतिहासिक प्रमाण अत्यल्प मात्रा में उपलब्ध होता है। कबीरदास, सूरदास, जायसी, तुलसीदास आदि सन्त कवि मध्यकाल के हैं, किन्तु उनके सम्बन्ध में हमें आज भी प्रामाणिक और निर्विवाद जानकारी नहीं मिल पायी है। तथ्यपरक जानकारी के अभाव में अनेक प्रकार की कपोल-कल्पित जनश्रुतियाँ प्रचारित हो जाती हैं और परस्पर विरोधी मतों की प्रतिष्ठा होने लगती है। गोस्वामी तुलसीदास के जीवन-वृत्त के सम्बन्ध में भी यही स्थिति है। उनके जन्म स्थान, कुल-गोत्र, माता-पिता, परिवार, गुरु आदि के सम्बन्ध में अनेक मान्यताएँ प्रचलित हैं, जन्म और मृत्यु की तिथियों के सम्वन्ध में भी विवाद है।
कतिपय ग्रन्थों में गोस्वामी तुलसीदास के जीवनवृत्त का उल्लेख किया गया है। नाभादास द्वारा लिखित भक्तमाल में एक छप्पय के माध्यम से तुलसीदास को वाल्मीकि का अवतार होने की बात कही गयी है। इस छप्पय में गोस्वामी जी की जीवनी के स्थान पर उनकी एकनिष्ठ राम-भक्ति को ही रेखांकित किया गया है, प्रियादास द्वारा लिखित भक्तमाल की टीका में तुलसीदास की चमत्कारिक सिद्धियों का उल्लेख है। दो सौ बावन वैष्णवन की वार्ता में तुलसीदास को नन्ददास का बड़ा भाई बताया गया है और इसी प्रसंग में उनके काशीवास और उनकी व्रज-यात्रा का वर्णन है। वेणीमाधवदास द्वारा लिखित गोसाईचरित में तुलसीदास के जीवन का विस्तृत वर्णन है। कहा जाता है कि वेणीमाधवदास तुलसीदास के समकालीन थे और उन्हीं के साथ रहते थे।
