I feel immense pleasure in presenting before you, the readers, the brief biography of a very simple, true patriot and messiah of democracy like Lal Bahadur Shastri. I am deeply grateful to ‘National Book Trust, India’ for giving me the opportunity to write this book. In order to bring this manuscript of mine in book form, I also express my gratitude to the Hindi editor of the Trust, Mr. Deepak Kumar Gupta, who read the manuscript very attentively and made many desired improvements in it. Due to his good efforts, many rare photographs of Shastri ji became available courtesy of Lal Bahadur Shastri National Memorial Trust, New Delhi, which have been used in this book. We are grateful to Shastri ji's son Shri Anil Shastri for his cooperation in improving the manuscript and providing photographs.
