Harivanshpuran is not only a narrative book but is also a high-class epic with epic qualities. In its Santoma Marga, the character of Lord Neminath begins and its literary scope increases. हरिवंशपुराण न केवल कथा ग्रन्थ है किन्तु महाकाव्यके गुणोंमे युक्त उच्च कोटिका महाकाव्य भी है। इसके संतोमवें मर्गमे नेमिनाथ भगवानका चरित्र प्रारम्भ होता है वहींमे साहित्यिक मुपमा इसकी बढ़ती जाती है । इसका पचपनावा स्वर्ग यमकादि अलंकारोंमे अलंकृत है। अनेक सर्ग सुन्दर-सुन्दर छन्दोंमे विभूषित है । ऋतुवर्णन, चन्द्रोदयवर्णन आदि भी अपने ढंगके निराले हैं । नेमिनाथ भगवानके वैराग्य तथा बलदेवके विलाप आदिके वर्णन करनेके लिये जिनसेनने जो छन्द चूने हैं वे रस परिपाकके अत्यन्त अनरूप है। श्रीकृष्णकी मृत्यु के बाद बलदेवका करुण विलाप और स्नेहका चित्रण, लक्ष्मणको मृत्युके बाद रविपेणके द्वारा पद्मपुराणमें वर्णित राम-विलापके अनुरूप है । वह इतना करण चित्रण हुआ है कि पाठक अश्रुधाराको नहीं रोक सकता । नेमिनाथके
