जेठका महीना है । भीषण गरमी पड़ रही है । जहाँ दुधारू गायें भी सूख गयी हों, वहाँ दूध तो क्या, छाछ का मिलना भी कठिन है । इसी समय हमारे गाँव में एक गृहस्थ ने छाछ का सदावर्त खोला। छाछ गाँव का जीवन है। अतः इस छाछसत्र की बड़ी प्रशंसा हुई । सब ओर आशीर्वाद मिलने लगे ।
कुछ वर्ष पहले की बात है— गंगातटपर बसे हुए एक बहुत बड़े नगरमें नवयुवक मित्र गंगास्नान करने जा रहे थे। रास्ते में उन्हें कीचड़ में कोई चमकती हुई चीज दिखलायी दी । उन्होंने कौतूहल वश कीचड़ से उस चीज को निकालकर देखा तो वह बहुत बहुमूल्य हीरे का हार था— कम-से-कम एक लाख रुपये मूल्यका । वे दोनों स्वयं पहले धनी घरानेके थे, उन्हें हीरों की पहचान थी । उनमेंसे एक मित्र बहुत अधिक अर्थसंकटमें था ।
