पुराण शास्त्रों में 'श्रीमद्देवीभागवतमहापुराण' का अत्यन्त महिमामय स्थान है। पुराणोंकी परिगणनामें वेदतुल्य, पवित्र और सभी लक्षणोंसे युक्त यह पुराण पाँचवाँ है। शक्तिके उपासक इस पुराणको 'शाक्तभागवत' कहते हैं। इस ग्रन्थके आदि, मध्य और अन्तमें - सर्वत्र भगवती आद्याशक्तिकी महिमाका प्रतिपादन किया गया है। इस पुराणमें मुख्य रूपसे परब्रह्म परमात्माके मातुरूप और उनकी उपासनाका वर्णन है। भगवती आद्याशक्तिकी लीलाएँ अनन्त हैं, उन लीलाकथाओंका प्रतिपादन ही इस ग्रन्थका मुख्य प्रतिपाद्य विषय है, जिसके सम्यक् अवगाहनसे साधकों तथा भक्तोंका मन देवीके पद्मपरागका भ्रमर बनकर भक्तिमार्गका पथिक बन जाता है।
संसारमें सभी प्राणियोंके लिये मातृभावकी महती महिमा है। मानव अपनी सबसे अधिक श्रद्धा स्वाभाविक रूपसे माताके ही चरणोंमें अर्पित करता है; क्योंकि सर्वप्रथम माताकी ही गोदमें उसे लोक- दर्शनका सौभाग्य प्राप्त होता है, इसलिये माता ही सभी प्राणियोंकी आदिगुरुके रूपमें प्रतिष्ठित है। उसकी करुणा और कृपा बालकोंके लौकिक तथा पारलौकिक कल्याणका आधार है; इसीलिये 'मातृदेवो भव पितृदेवो भव आचार्यदेवो भव' - इन श्रुतिवाक्योंमें सबसे पहले माताका ही स्थान है। जो भगवती महाशक्तिस्वरूपिणी देवी तथा समष्टिस्वरूपिणी सम्पूर्ण जगत्की माता हैं, वे ही सम्पूर्ण लोकोंको कल्याणका मार्ग प्रदर्शित करनेवाली ज्ञानगुरुस्वरूपा भी हैं। वास्तवमें महाशक्ति ही परब्रह्मके रूपमें प्रतिष्ठित हैं, जो विभिन्न रूपोंमें अनेकविध लीलाएँ करती रहती हैं।
