श्री सर्वशक्तिमान् सच्चिदानन्द परम कारुणिक परब्रह्म परमेश्वर को अनम्त धन्यवाद है, जिन्होंने जगत् की रचना कर सांसारिक जीवों के उपकारार्थ अनिर्वचनीय मुखोत्पादक सामग्रियों को प्रस्तुत किया। प्रत्येक विषय-ज्ञान के लिये अनेक उपाय भी दर्शाये। परमेश्वर की ही प्रेरणा से त्रिकालदर्शी महर्षियों के द्वारा कला-कौशल-ज्ञान के लिये शिल्प, रोग से मुक्त होने के लिये वैद्यक, भूत, भविष्य, वर्तमान जानने के लिये ज्यौतिष एवं अनेक विषय जानने के लिये अनेकानेक शास्त्र रचे गये। अवान्तर भेदों के सहित ज्यौतिषशास्त्र में अनेक शाखायें हैं; जैसे स्वर, केरल, होरा, शकुन, गणित, संहिता और सामुद्रिक। इस शास्त्र के द्वारा प्राचीनकाल के महर्षि लोग भूत, भविष्य, वर्तमानकाल की यथार्थ बातें बतलाते थे; जो पुराणों में प्रसङ्ग वश यथावकाश उपलब्ध होते हैं। उन ग्रन्थों में हल, पद्म, पुष्करिणी, हय, गज इत्यादि के द्वारा फल- कथन की प्रणाली कही गई है। वस्तुतः मनुष्यों के हाथ में हाथी, घोड़ा, रथ, पालकी, हल, बैल इत्यादि प्रत्यक्ष रूप से नहीं दिख पड़ते, इनका कोई विशेष चिह्न अवश्य है परन्तु उनके रूप और स्थान का परिचय प्रायः सर्वत्र नहीं मिलता, इसी कारण से देववाणी में यह ग्रन्थ लुप्तप्राय हो रहा है।
पाश्चात्त्य विद्वानों ने यद्यपि इस विषय में नवीन प्रणाली का अत्यन्त अनुसन्धान कर इस शास्त्र की उन्नति की है और उन्हीं रेखाओं के द्वारा विचित्र ढंग से फल-कथन प्रणाली भी प्रदर्शित की है, तथापि (रेखा. कामदुधा स्मृता) रेखायें कामधेनु रूप हैं- ऐसा महर्षियों ने कहा है। अतः प्राचीन पद्धति के अनुसार फल-कथन में कठिनाई होती है। इस कारण इस छोटी-सी पुस्तक में बहुत अन्वेषण के साथ प्राचीन हस्तलिखित ग्रन्थों का अध्ययन, मनन और अनुभव द्वारा प्राचीन तथा नवीन रीतियों का समावेश कर चित्रों में सुगमता- पूर्वक अङ्क के द्वारा रेखाओं के रूप, स्थान और सप्रमाण फल दशयि गये हैं।
