Short Description Of The Book:
Among the eighteen Puranas, the Matsya Purana holds its distinct place. It is called Matsya Purana because it is associated with the Matsya incarnation of Lord Vishnu. The most divine and auspicious advice given by Lord Matsya to King Vaivasvata Manu and the seven sages is contained in the Matsya Purana. At the beginning of creation, when a demon named Hayagriwa stole the Vedas and other scriptures and went to the underworld, the Lord assumed the form of a fish and saved the Vedas. Among the ten incarnations of Lord Vishnu, the Matsya incarnation is the first.
All sects like Vaishnava, Shaiva, Shakta, Ganapati etc. believe in Matsya Purana equally. The number of verses in this Purana is fourteen thousand, which is composed in 291 chapters. It contains the story of the Lord's incarnation as a fish, the Manu-Matsya dialogue, the description of creation, the mysticism of the essence, the manvantaras and the ancestral lineage in detail. Along with the description of the shraddhas, the description of the kings of the Chandra dynasty is also the subject of this Purana. The description of the character of Yayati is very interesting and instructive, which declares the path of pleasure to be improper in all respects and encourages one to take refuge in the Dharma of renunciation and sacrifice.
The description of various vows is also a great feature of this Purana. The method of many vows, the glory of various gifts, peaceful and nourishing rituals, the nature of the nine planets and the method of tarpan have been presented through beautiful stories. Then the glory of Prayag, description of geography and astronomy, Jyotish Chakra, Tripurasura battle, Tarakasura legend, Nrishimha character, Kashi and Narmada Mahatmya, names and lineages of sages, story of Sati and Savitri and royal duties are depicted in it.
Subject index of Puranas, genealogy of Bhrigu, Angira, Atri, Vishvamitra, Vasishta and other sages who introduced the gotra, politics, travel time, dreams, omen, angasphuran, astrology, gemology, characteristics of statues of various gods, patterns and construction methods, gods and Architecture relating to house-building etc. are other useful subjects of this Purana. The stories of Kach-Devayani-Akhyan, Tripura-vadh, Parvati-parinaya, Vibhuti Dwadashivrata etc. described in it are very beautiful and useful. Regarding the importance of reading and hearing this Purana, Lord Matsya himself has said: This Purana is supremely sacred, increasing life, increasing fame, destroying great sins and auspicious. Whoever reads even one foot of a verse of this Purana is freed from sins and attains the position of Sriman Narayana and enjoys divine pleasures.
This important Purana, published before the letterpress as a special issue of Kalyan, had been unavailable for a long time. Keeping in view the usefulness of the subject and valuable mythological literature to the masses and the request of the readers, we are pleased to present this new edition of 'Matsyamahapurana' translation with beautiful offset printing, attractive decorations and strong binding . पुस्तक का संक्षिप्त विवरण:
अठारह पुराणोंमें मत्स्यपुराण अपना विशिष्ट स्थान रखता है। भगवान् विष्णुके मत्स्यावतारसे सम्बद्ध होनेके कारण यह मत्स्यपुराण कहलाता है। भगवान् मत्स्यके द्वारा राजा वैवस्वत मनु तथा सप्तर्षियोंको जो अत्यन्त दिव्य एवं कल्याणकारी उपदेश दिये गये थे, वे ही मत्स्यपुराणमें संगृहीत हैं। सृष्टिके प्रारम्भमें जब हयग्रीव नामक असुर वेदादि शास्त्रोंको चुराकर पातालमें चला गया, तब भगवान्ने मत्स्यावतार धारणकर वेदोंका उद्धार किया। भगवान् विष्णुके दस अवतारोंमें मत्स्यावतार सर्वप्रथम है।
वैष्णव, शैव, शाक्त, गाणपत्यादि सभी सम्प्रदायोंमें मत्स्यपुराणकी समानरूपसे मान्यता है। इस पुराणकी श्लोक संख्या चौदह हजार है, जो २९१ अध्यायोंमें उपनिबद्ध है। इसमें भगवान्के मत्स्यावतारकी कथा, मनु-मत्स्य-संवाद, सृष्टि-वर्णन, तत्त्व-मीमांसा, मन्वन्तर तथा पितृवंशका विस्तृत वर्णन है। श्राद्धों के सांगोपाङ्ग निरूपणके साथ चन्द्रवंशी राजाओंका वर्णन भी इस पुराणका पठनीय विषय है। ययाति चरित्रका वर्णन अत्यन्त रोचक एवं शिक्षाप्रद है, जो भोगमार्गको सर्वधा अनुचित बताकर निवृत्ति एवं त्यागधर्मका आश्रय ग्रहण करनेकी प्रेरणा देता है।
विविध व्रतोंका वर्णन भी इस पुराणकी महती विशेषता है। अनेक व्रतानुष्ठानोंकी विधि, विविध दानोंकी महिमा, शान्तिक एवं पौष्टिक कर्म, नवग्रहोंका स्वरूप एवं तर्पण-विधिका प्रतिपादन सुन्दर कथाओंके माध्यमसे किया गया है। तदनन्तर प्रयाग-महिमा, भूगोल-खगोलका वर्णन, ज्योतिश्चक्र, त्रिपुरासुर संग्राम, तारकासुर-आख्यान, नृसिंह-चरित्र, काशी तथा नर्मदा-माहात्म्य, ऋषियोंका नाम-गोत्र तथा वंश, सती-सावित्रीकी कथा तथा राजधर्मोका इसमें सरस चित्रण किया गया है।
पुराणोंकी विषयानुक्रमणिका, भृगु, अंगिरा, अत्रि, विश्वामित्र, वसिष्ठादि गोत्रप्रवर्तक ऋषियोंके वंश-वर्णन, राजनीति, यात्राकाल, स्वप्नशास्त्र, शकुनशास्त्र, अंगस्फुरण, ज्योतिषशास्त्र, रत्नविज्ञान, विभिन्न देवताओंकी प्रतिमाओंके स्वरूप-लक्षण, प्रतिमान-मान तथा निर्माण विधि, देव-प्रतिष्ठा एवं गृह-निर्माणसम्बन्धी वास्तुविद्या आदि इस पुराणके अन्य उपयोगी विषय हैं। इसमें वर्णित कच-देवयानी-आख्यान, त्रिपुर-वध, पार्वती-परिणय, विभूति द्वादशीव्रत आदिकी कथाएँ अत्यन्त सुन्दर और उपयोगी हैं। इस पुराणके पठन-पाठन एवं श्रवणके माहात्म्यके विषयमें स्वयं मत्स्यभगवान्ने कहा है- यह पुराण परम पवित्र, आयुकी वृद्धि करनेवाला, कीर्तिवर्धक, महापापोंका नाशक तथा शुभकारक है। इस पुराणके एक श्लोकके एक पादको भी जो पढ़ता है, वह पापोंसे मुक्त होकर श्रीमन्नारायणके पदको प्राप्त कर लेता है तथा दिव्य सुखोंका भोग करता है।
