Short Description Of The Book:
The Sushruta Samhita is an ancient Sanskrit (Indian) text of Ayurveda and surgery. The Sushruta Samhita is one of the three basic texts of Ayurveda. In the eighth century, this work was translated into Arabic under the title 'Kitab-e-Susrud'.
The Sushruta Samhita is an important text of the Brihadtrayi (Vrihattrayi = Charaka Samhita + Sushruta Samhita + Ashtangahridaya). This code is considered to be the largest literature of surgery in Ayurvedic literature. The text taught by Dhanvantari and compiled by his disciple Sushruta became known in the Ayurvedic world as 'Sushruta Samhita' In time, in the 5th century, Nagarjuna added the Uttaratantra to this Samhita and revised the entire Samhita. Subsequently, in the 10th century, Chandrat, son of Teesat, corrected its text on the basis of Jejjat's interpretation. His contribution was like a reward. Its author is Sushruta who was born in Kashi in the sixth century BC.
Although the Sushruta Samhita available today contains ample description of Ashtanga Ayurveda, it is recognized as the oldest and largest text of surgery as it was based on surgery. Modern surgeons also consider Sushruta to be the father of surgery.
Sushruta Samhita is basically divided into 5 places and 120 chapters (Sutrasthan-46, Nidanasthan-16, Sharirasthan-10, Chikitsathan-40 and Kalpasthan-8 chapters). By adding the 66 chapters of Nagarjuna's Uttaratantra, a total of 186 chapters are found in this Samhita. It mentions 1120 diseases, 700 medicinal plants, 64 procedures based on mineral sources, 57 procedures based on animal sources, and eight types of surgical procedures.
In the sutras of this code, the fundamental principles of Ayurveda like Dosha-Dhatu-Mal, Ritucharya, Hitahita, Arishta, Rasa-Gun-Virya-Vipak, Diet, Medicines, Vamana-Virechan etc. along with the basic principles of surgery like Ashtavidha are included. There is also incomparable description of surgery, yantra, shastranushastra, ksharakarma, agnikarma, jalaukavacharana, karnavyadha, karnabandha, mango and ripe ulcers, vranalepan, vranbandha, shat kriyakal, salyapananayan etc. Thereafter, in Nidanasthan, there is a detailed description of some major diseases of surgery and in Sarirasthan, there is a description of philosophical topics, fundamental principles of virginity, human physiology and anatomy. The location of Marmasharir in this very place is the best form of Sushruta's knowledge about body, it is a matter of curiosity even for modern medical science. Adhuna, further research is required on this topic. In Ayurvedic literature, there is no other text which gives as much detailed description of anatomy as is found in Sushruta Samhita. For this reason, the saying 'Sharire Sushruta Shrestha' (Sushruta is the best in the explanation of anatomy) is famous in Ayurveda literature.
पुस्तक का संक्षिप्त विवरण:
सुश्रुतसंहिता आयुर्वेद एवं शल्यचिकित्सा का प्राचीन संस्कृत(भारतीय) ग्रन्थ है। सुश्रुतसंहिता आयुर्वेद के तीन मूलभूत ग्रन्थों में से एक है। आठवीं शताब्दी में इस ग्रन्थ का अरबी भाषा में 'किताब-ए-सुस्रुद' नाम से अनुवाद हुआ था।
सुश्रुतसंहिता बृहद्त्रयी का एक महत्वपूर्ण ग्रन्थ है (वृहत्त्रयी = चरकसंहिता + सुश्रुतसंहिता +अष्टाङ्गहृदयम्) । यह संहिता आयुर्वेद साहित्य में शल्यतन्त्र की वृहद साहित्य मानी जाती है। धन्वन्तरि द्वारा उपदिष्ट एवं उनके शिष्य सुश्रुत द्वारा प्रणीत ग्रन्थ आयुर्वेदजगत में 'सुश्रुतसंहिता' के नाम से विख्यात हुआ। कालक्रम में ५वीं शताब्दी में नागार्जुन द्वारा इस संहिता में उत्तरतन्त्र जोड़ने के साथ-साथ सम्पूर्ण संहिता का प्रतिसंस्कार भी किया गया। इसके बाद १०वीं सदी में तीसटपुत्र चन्द्रट ने जेज्जट की व्याख्या के आधार पर इसकी पाठशुद्धि की। उनका यह योगदान भी प्रतिसंस्कार जैसा ही था। इसके रचयिता सुश्रुत हैं जो छठी शताब्दी ईसापूर्व काशी में जन्मे थे।
यद्यपि वर्तमानकाल में उपलब्ध सुश्रुतसंहिता में अष्टाङ्ग आयुर्वेद का पर्याप्त वर्णन मिलता है तथापि शल्यचिकित्सा को आधार मानकर निर्मित होने के कारण इसे शल्यचिकित्सा के प्राचीनतम एवं आकर ग्रन्थ के रूप में मान्यता प्राप्त हुई है। आधुनिक शल्यचिकित्सक भी सुश्रुत को शल्यचिकित्सा का जनक मानते हैं।
सुश्रुतसंहिता मूलतः ५ स्थानों और १२० अध्यायों (सूत्रस्थान-४६, निदानस्थान-१६, शारीरस्थान-१०, चिकित्सास्थान-४० एवं कल्पस्थान-८ अध्यायों) में विभाजित है। नागार्जुनकृत उत्तरतन्त्र के ६६ अध्यायों को भी इसमें जोड़ देने पर वर्तमान में इस संहिता में कुल १८६ अध्याय मिलते हैं। इसमें ११२० रोगों, ७०० औषधीय पौधों, खनिज-स्रोतों पर आधारित ६४ प्रक्रियाओं, जन्तु-स्रोतों पर आधारित ५७ प्रक्रियाओं, तथा आठ प्रकार की शल्य क्रियाओं का उल्लेख है।
इस संहिता के सूत्रस्थान में आयुर्वेद के मौलिक सिद्धान्त जैसे दोष-धातु-मल, ऋतुचर्या, हिताहित, अरिष्ट, रस-गुण-वीर्य-विपाक, आहार, औषध-द्रव्य, वमन-विरेचन आदि के साथ-साथ शल्यचिकित्सा के मूलभूत सिद्धान्तों यथा अष्टविध शल्यकर्म, यन्त्र, शस्त्रानुशस्त्र, क्षारकर्म, अग्निकर्म, जलौकावचारण, कर्णव्यध, कर्णबन्ध, आम और पक्व व्रण, व्रणालेपन, व्रणबन्ध, षट् क्रियाकाल, शल्यापनयन आदि का भी अतुलनीय वर्णन मिलता है। तदुपरान्त निदानस्थान में शल्यशास्त्र के कतिपय प्रमुख रोगों का निदानपञ्चकात्मक वर्णन एवं शारीरस्थान में दार्शनिक विषयों, कौमारभृत्य के मौलिक सिद्धान्तों, मानव शरीरक्रिया और शरीररचना का वर्णन है। इसी स्थान में मर्मशारीर की अवस्थिति सुश्रुत के शारीर विषयक ज्ञान का उत्कृष्टतम स्वरूप है, आधुनिक चिकित्सा विज्ञान के लिए भी यह कुतुहल का विषय है। अधुना इस विषय पर पुनः अनुसन्धान अपेक्षित है। आयुर्वेदीय साहित्य में शरीररचना (एनाटॉमी) का जितना विशद विवेचन सुश्रुतसंहिता में मिलता है, उतना किसी अन्य ग्रन्थ में नहीं है। इसी कारण आयुर्वेदवाङ्मय में 'शारीरे सुश्रुतः श्रेष्ठः' (शरीररचना की व्याख्या में सुश्रुत श्रेष्ठ हैं) उक्ति प्रसिद्ध है।
