Short Description Of The Book:
The real purpose of studying history is to attain self-knowledge. Correct understanding of the past helps in understanding the present properly, on the basis of which the task of beautifying the present and determining the right directions for building the future becomes easier. Insistence on complete contempt of the past is a sign of stupidity. But it is also important to keep this in mind that the past should not remain just a meaningless funeral procession. What should be discarded in the past and what should be seen should be considered from an objective perspective. This objective view is necessary in writing history. In this book, an attempt has been made to present the history of ancient India in its holistic form. The subject of study of history is man or society. There are various aspects of its organization and there is interdependent relationship among them. In the presented book, all aspects of ancient Indian man and society - political, social, economic, cultural - have been studied in a coordinated manner and an attempt has been made to explain their mutual relationships.
With the aim of inculcating a critical vision in the students, the details have always been kept along with the evidence and an attempt has also been made to clarify how various scholars have used them in support of their opinions. Hope students will benefit from it. The book has been written specifically keeping graduate-level students in mind. But postgraduate level students will also be able to benefit from it and students appearing in various competitive examinations will also find it useful. The credit for publishing the book goes to my friend Dr. Chandrakishore Ojha, Lecturer, Department of Chemistry, Rajasthan University, Jaipur. Dr. Ojha has been an old acquaintance of Mr. Ramchandra Aparwal, the founder of Jaipur Publishing House and Mr. Agarwal contacted me through him to write the book. I am thankful to Dr. Ojha for helping me in writing the book. Due to falling ill midway, some pages of the book had to be written orally. In this work his students Ku. Uma Sharma and Shri Jagdish Prasad Gujar and son Ch. He deserves thanks for the help he received from Kartikeya Mishra.
पुस्तक का संक्षिप्त विवरण:
इतिहास के अध्ययन का वास्तविक प्रयोजन आत्मज्ञान की प्राप्ति हैं। अतीत का सम्यक् बोध वर्तमान को ठीक-ठीक समझने में सहायक होता है जिसके आधार पर वर्तमान को संवारने तथा भविष्य निर्माण की दिशाओं को ठीक प्रकार से निर्धारित करने का कार्य सरल हो जाता हैं। अतीत के सर्वथा तिरस्कार का आग्रह मूढ़ता का परिचायक है। किन्तु इसे भी ध्यान में रखना आवश्यक है कि अतीत निरर्थक शव-वहन मात्र बनकर न रेह जाएँ। अतीत में क्या त्याज्य है और क्या पाहा इस पर निरपेक्ष दृष्टि से विचार किया जाना चाहिए। इतिहास लेखन में यह निरपेक्ष दृष्टि आवश्यक है। इस पुस्तक में इस दृष्टि से प्राचीन भारत के इतिहास को इसके सर्वागीण रूप में प्रस्तुत करने का प्रयास किया है। इतिहास के अध्ययन का विषय मनुष्य अथवा समाज है। इसके संगठन के विविध पक्ष होते हैं और इनमें अन्योन्याश्रित सम्बन्ध होता है। प्रस्तुत पुस्तक में प्राचीन भारतीय मनुष्य और समाज के सभी पक्षों- राजनीतिक, सामाजिक, आर्थिक, सांस्कृतिक का समन्वित रूप में अध्ययन किया गया हैं और उनके पारस्परिक सम्बन्धों को व्याख्यायित करने की चेष्टा को गई है।
विद्यार्थियों में समालोचनात्मक दृष्टि उत्पन्न करने के उद्देश्य से विवरण को सदैव साक्ष्यों के साथ रखा गया है और यह भी स्पष्ट करने की चेष्टा की गई है कि विविध विद्वानों ने अपने मतों के समर्थन में किस प्रकार उनका उपयोग किया है। आशा है कि विद्यार्थी इससे लाभान्वित होंगे। पुस्तक विशेषरूपेण स्नातक-स्तरीय विद्यार्थियों को ध्यान में रखकर लिखी गयी है। किन्तु स्नातकोत्तर स्तर के विद्यार्थी भी इससे लाभ उठा सकेंगे और विविध प्रतियोगिता परीक्षाओं में बैठने वाले विद्यार्थी भी इसे उपयोगी पाएँगे। पुस्तक के प्रणयन का श्रेय मित्र डॉ. चन्द्रकिशोर ओझा, प्रवक्ता, रसायन शास्त्र विभाग, राजस्थान विश्वविद्यालय जयपुर को है। डॉ. ओझा जयपुर पब्लिशिंग हाउस के अधिष्ठाता श्री रामचन्द्र अप्रवाल के पुराने परिचित रहें हैं और श्री अग्रवाल ने पुस्तक लिखने के लिए उन्हीं के माध्यम से मुझे सम्पर्क किया। पुस्तक के लेखन में जुटाने के लिए मैं डॉ. ओझा का आभार मानता हूँ। बीच में बीमार पड़ जाने से पुस्तक के कुछ पृष्ठों को बोल कर लिखना पड़ा। इस कार्य में अपने विद्यार्थियों कु. उमा शर्मा तथा श्री जगदीश प्रसाद गूजर एवं पुत्र चि. कार्तिकेय मिश्र से जो सहायता मिली उसके लिए वे धन्यवाद के पात्र है।
