Short Description Of The Book:
In the literature of every country, the folk tales of that country have a very important place. India's folklore is as old as its literature. Even among these stories, the stories written by Shri Vishnu Sharma have the highest place. These stories have been compiled in five parts. The name of the collection of these five parts is 'Panchantra'.
The stories of Panchatantra are not aimless stories. They contain the essence of Indian ethics. Each story propounds some part of the policy. Every story has a definite purpose.
These stories have become famous all over the world. These have been translated into twenty languages of the world. These were first translated in the sixth century. Since then they have been translated into every language of Europe. Recently the world's most popular publishing house 'Pocket Book Inc.' has also published a cheaper version of the English translation of Panchatantra. Millions of copies of this translation have been sold.
In Panchatantra, the essence of all the policy scriptures of India - Manu, Shukra and Chanakya's policy sentences has been given in the form of story. Even the most intelligent person can learn profound moral lessons from these stories.
About 160 years ago, England's famous scholar Sir William Jones wrote about Panchatantra:
Their (The Hindoo's) Neeti Shastra, or System of Ethics, is yet preserved and the fables of Vishnu Sharma, are the most beautiful, if not the most ancient collection of parables in the world.
Professor Murale, while writing the introduction to Panchatantra and Hitopadesha, had written:
It comes to us from a far place and time, as a manual of worldly wisdom, inspired throughout by the religion of its place and time...every fable of Panchatantra can still be applied to human character, every maxim quoted from the wise men of two or three thousand years ago when parted from the local accidents of form, might find its time for being quoted now in church or at home.
Other foreign scholars have also openly praised the stories of Panchatantra and its morals. Still, there are lakhs of educated people in our country who have not heard the name of Panchatantra.
This indifference towards our literature is now unforgivable. After attaining independence, it has become our duty to give due respect to our literature. Panchatantra can be called the first step of the temple of Indian literature.
पुस्तक का संक्षिप्त विवरण:
प्रत्येक देश के साहित्य में उस देश की लोककथाओं का स्थान बहुत महत्त्वपूर्ण होता है। भारत का साहित्य जितना पुराना है उतनी ही पुरानी इसकी लोककथाएँ हैं। इन कथाओं में भी श्री विष्णु शर्मा द्वारा प्रणीत कथाओं का स्थान सबसे ऊँचा है। इन कथाओं का पाँच भागों में संकलन किया गया है। इन पाँच भागों के संग्रह का नाम ही 'पंचतन्त्र' है।
पंचतन्त्र की कथाएँ निरुद्देश्य कथाएँ नहीं हैं। उनमें भारतीय नीतिशास्त्र का निचोड़ है। प्रत्येक कथा नीति के किसी न किसी भाग का प्रतिपादन करती है। प्रत्येक कथा का निश्चित उद्देश्य है।
ये कथाएँ संसार-भर में प्रसिद्ध हो चुकी हैं। विश्व की बीस भाषाओं में इनके अनुवाद हो चुके हैं। सबसे पहले इनका अनुवाद छठी शताब्दी में हुआ था। तब से अब तक यूरोप की हर भाषा में इनका अनुवाद हुआ है। अभी- अभी संसार की सबसे अधिक लोकप्रिय प्रकाशन संस्था 'Pocket Book Inc.' ने भी पंचतन्त्र के अंग्रेज़ी अनुवाद का सस्ता संस्करण प्रकाशित किया है। इस अनुवाद की लाखों प्रतियाँ बिक चुकी हैं।
पंचतन्त्र में भारत के सब नीति-शास्त्रों-मनु, शुक्र औरचाणक्य के नीति वाक्यों का सार कथारूप में दिया है। मन्द से मन्द बुद्धि वाला भी इन कथाओं से गहन से गहन नीति की शिक्षा ले सकता है।
आज से लगभग 160 वर्ष पूर्व इंग्लैंड के प्रसिद्ध विद्वान सर विलियम जोन्स ने पंचतन्त्र के विषय में लिखा था:

अर्थात् हिन्दुओं का नीति-शास्त्र अभी तक सुरक्षित है और विष्णु शर्मा की कहानियाँ संसार की सबसे पुरानी नहीं तो सर्वश्रेष्ठ कहानियाँ अवश्य हैं।
प्रोफेसर मूरले ने पंचतन्त्र व हितोपदेश की भूमिका लिखते हुए लिखा था :

सारांश यह है कि पंचतन्त्र के नीति-वाक्यों में सांसारिक ज्ञान का जो कोष है, वह समय और स्थान की दूरी होने पर भी सदैव उपयोगी है। पंचतन्त्र की प्रत्येक कहानी आज भी मानव-चरित्र का सच्चा चित्रण करती है और उसमें लिखे गए दो-तीन हज़ार वर्ष के नीति-वाक्य आज भी मानव मात्र का पथ-प्रदर्शन कर सकते हैं; आज भी उनका प्रवचन घरों व गिरजाघरों में हो सकता है।
अन्य विदेशी विद्वानों ने भी पंचतन्त्र की कथाओं और उनके नीति-वाक्यों की मुक्तकण्ठ से प्रशंसा की है। फिर भी हमारे देश के लाखों शिक्षित व्यक्ति ऐसे हैं जिन्होंने पंचतन्त्र का नाम नहीं सुना है।
अपने साहित्य के प्रति यह उदासीनता अब अक्षम्य है। स्वाधीनता-प्राप्ति के बाद अपने साहित्य को उचित आदर देना हमारा कर्तव्य हो गया है। पंचतन्त्र को भारतीय साहित्य-मन्दिर की प्रथम सीढ़ी कहा जा सकता है।
