भारतीय वाङ्मय में "महाभारत" का उल्लेखनीय स्थान है। इसके सम्बन्ध में प्रनेक उक्तियां विस्यात है, परन्तु उन सब का संयोजन एक ही उक्ति में कर दिया गया है पौर वह उनित है-
'पविहास्ति न तदन्यत्र पन्नेहास्ति न तत् क्वचित्
मर्थात् जिस वस्तु का विवेचन महाभारत में है, यह विवेचन अन्यत्र वाङ्मय मे भी उपलब्ध है और जिस वस्तु विषय का विवेचन महाभारत में नहीं मिलता, वह विवेचन कहीं पर भी प्राप्त नहीं किया जा सकता। वास्तव में जिस किसी भी समीक्षक ने यह कहा है, यह सत्य है, तथ्य है। इसीलिए महाभारत को मनीषी "महाकोप" की संज्ञा देते हैं। किसी सूक्तिकार का कथन है वेद चार मही, पांच है, वह पांचवा वेद है-"महाभारत" ।.
