Short Description Of The Book:
The importance of Deepvansa in the cultural history of India is universally acknowledged, yet its Hindi version remained unavailable till date for Hindi speaking scholars. Even the institutions that carry out important responsibilities of such tasks have shown indifference here.
In Pali literature, the texts of lineage literature are famous as history texts. Relevant material about Lord Buddha is available in Tripitaka and its eight stories, but what is called 'history' in today's language comes within the scope of lineage literature only.
Good research has been done and is being done on Pali literature, of which scholars can be proud. Even today, it is a matter of regret that till now the attention of scholars remained focused only on Tripitaka and its eight stories and they ignored the historical aspect in Pali literature.
The name of the creator of Deepavansa has not yet been certified by historians. They consider it to be the work of an unknown author. This is a composition of that period in Sri Lanka when no composition was written in the name of any particular person, but in the name of some sect or sect. It is clear that 'Deepavansa' is the oldest work describing this belief or sect in historical form.

भारत के सांस्कृतिक इतिहासमें दीपवंस का महत्व सर्वमान्य है, फिर भी हिन्दीभाषी जिज्ञासुओं के लिये इसका हिन्दी रूपान्तर आज तक अनुपलब्ध रहा। ऐसे कार्योंका गुरुतर दायित्व निर्वहन करनेवाली संस्थाओं ने भी इधर उदासीनता ही दिखलायी है।
पालिवाङ्मय में वंश-साहित्य के ग्रन्थ ही इतिहास ग्रन्थोंके रूप में प्रसिद्ध है । त्रिपिटक एवं उसकी अट्ठकथाओं में भगवान् बुद्धके विषय में तो यथाप्रसङ्ग सामग्री मिलती है, परन्तु आजकी भाषा में जिसे 'इतिहास' कहा जाता है, वह तो वंश साहित्य की ही परिधिमें आता है ।
पालि-साहित्य पर अच्छे अनुसन्धान भी हुए हैं और हो भी रहे हैं जिन पर विद्वान् गर्व कर सकते हैं। आज भी यह खेदका ही विषय है कि विद्वानोंका ध्यान अभी तक त्रिपिटक एवं उसकी अट्ठकथाओं तक ही केन्द्रित रहा और उन्होंने पालिवाङ्मय में इतिहास पक्षकी उपेक्षा की।
दीपवंस के रचनाकारका नाम अभी तक इतिहासविदों द्वारा प्रमाणित नहीं हो सका है। वे इसे अज्ञात लेखककी रचना मानते हैं। यह श्रीलङ्का के उस कालकी रचना है जब कोई भी रचना किसी व्यक्तिविशेष के नामसे नहीं की जाती थी, अपितु किसी मत या सम्प्रदाय के नाम से की जाती थी। यह स्पष्ट ही है कि 'दीपवंस' इस मत या सम्प्रदाय का इतिहास रूप में वर्णन करने वाली प्राचीनतम रचना है।
