Jacqueline 'Jackie' Giese was just over 16 years old and was studying in 10th grade when she found out she was pregnant. For some time, she was going on a 'date' with Theodore John 'Ted' Jorgensen, a 12th grade student from her same school. He was 18 years old and had won several local competitions in riding a one-wheel bicycle. This was not an accident. The two were in love and had decided to get married. Both their parents knew each other. Both of them were married on July 19, 1963 at Jackie's house. Since Giese was a minor, her mother and Jorgensen signed the application for a marriage license. The child was born on January 12, 1964. Both of them named him Jeffrey Preston Jorgensen.
This incident took place at the Saidia Base, located on the southern edge of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Saidia Base was, from 1946 to 1971, the largest nuclear weapons installation in the United States Department of Defense's top secret. At Sadiya Base and its sister establishment Manzano Base, nuclear weapons research, development, design, testing and training began under the Manhattan Project during World War II, which continued for the next 25 years. The activities of these installations are regulated by the regional branch of the United States Atomic Energy Commission and Jacqueline Giese's father, Lawrence Preston Giese, was its regional director. 'Ted' Jorgensen, on the other hand, was born in Chicago. Ted's father moved the family to Albuquerque while he and his younger brother Gordon were attending elementary school. Ted's father had taken up the job of a purchasing agent at the Saidiya Base and was in charge of purchasing supplies there. Ted's grandfather was an immigrant from Denmark and one of the last surviving veterans of the Spanish–American War. Thus, Geese and Ted's fathers knew each other.
