It is a long time ago that once the storyteller Sutji came to Naimisharanya. Seeing him coming, the sages living there greeted him. After the greeting, all the sages sat on their respective seats, then one of them said to Sutji - "O Sutji! You are an expert in telling stories full of knowledge and meditation of the world and beyond. Our request to you. We want you to tell us stories that will make us happy."

 Sutji was very happy to receive respect from the sages. He said, "The respect you have shown me is commendable. Here I will tell you a very beneficial story."

 After listening to Sutji, the sage said - "What story will you tell us?"

पुस्तक का संक्षिप्त विवरण:

बहुत प्राचीन समय की बात है कि एक बार नैमिषारण्य में कथाकार सूतजी पधारे। उन्हें आया देखकर वहां रहने वाले ऋषि मुनियों ने उनका अभिवादन किया। अभिवादन के बाद सभी ऋषि-मुनि अपने-अपने आसन पर बैठ गए तब उन्हीं में से किसी एक ने सूतजी से कहा- "हे सूत जी! आप लोक और लोकोत्तर के ज्ञान-ध्यान से परिपूर्ण कथा वाचन में सिद्धहस्त हैं। हमारा आप से निवेदन है कि आप हमें हमारा मंगल करने वाली कथाएं सुनायें।"

ऋषि-मुनियों से आदर पाकर सूतजी बहुत प्रसन्न हुए। उन्होंने कहा- "आपने जो मुझे आदर दिया है वह सराहनीय है। मैं यहां आप लोगों को परम कल्याणकारी कथा सुनाऊंगा।"

सूतजी की बात सुनकर ऋषि बोले- "आप हमें कौन-सी कथा सुनायेंगे?"
